Kinabatangan River Wildlife Checklist (Sabah, Borneo)

The Kinabatangan River in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, is one of the best places in Asia to see rainforest wildlife from a boat. Wild orangutans, proboscis monkeys, Bornean pygmy elephants, hornbills and saltwater crocodiles all live along its banks, which covers what local guides call the Borneo Big Five. This checklist covers 51 animals. The drier months, roughly March to October, are best.

Most visitors stay in riverside lodges near the villages of Sukau and Bilit, inside the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary. Wildlife watching is done mostly by small boat at dawn, dusk and after dark.

  • Bornean Orangutan, one of the animals to look for in Kinabatangan

    Bornean Orangutan

    Wild Bornean orangutans live in the riverside forest of the sanctuary. Look for their leafy nests high in the trees, and for movement in fruiting figs on the morning cruise.

    Proboscis Monkey

    Found only on Borneo, and the easiest of the five to see. Groups settle in the riverside trees in the late afternoon, and the big-nosed males are hard to miss.

  • Asian Elephant, one of the animals to look for in Kinabatangan

    Asian Elephant

    These are Bornean pygmy elephants. Herds move up and down the river over weeks, so sightings come and go. If you meet a herd, a good boatman keeps well back and never chases.

  • Rhinoceros Hornbill

    A huge black-and-white hornbill with an upturned orange casque. Listen for the loud whoosh of its wings as it flies over the river.

  • Saltwater Crocodile

    Large ones bask on muddy banks by day and show red eyeshine on night cruises. Never swim in the river.

  • Storm's Stork

    One of the world's rarest storks, and the Kinabatangan is one of its strongholds. Look for it on quiet side channels such as the Menanggul River near Sukau.

  • Sunda Clouded Leopard

    The Sunda clouded leopard is rarely seen, but the Kinabatangan is one of the better places to try. Your chance is on night cruises, if you are lucky.

  • Wrinkle-lipped Free-tailed Bat

    Hundreds of thousands pour out of the Gomantong Caves, near Sukau, at dusk. Bat hawks hunt the stream as it leaves.

Best time to see wildlife in Kinabatangan

The Kinabatangan can be visited all year, and wildlife is resident, so any month can be good. The drier months, roughly March to October, are the most comfortable, with calmer weather for boat trips and forest walks. The north-east monsoon brings heavier rain from about November to February. The river can flood the forest in these months, which sometimes pushes animals closer to the banks but can also make walks impossible and close some trails. Pygmy elephant herds follow their own routes rather than a season, so a sighting is never certain in any month. Orangutans are easier to find when figs and other trees near the river are fruiting. Days are hot and humid all year, often above 30°C.

Tips for spotting wildlife in Kinabatangan

  1. Take every cruise

    Dawn, late afternoon and night cruises each show different animals. Proboscis monkeys gather at dusk, birds and orangutans are active at dawn, and night cruises find owls, crocodiles and roosting kingfishers. Ask your guide to keep the spotlight off sleeping birds.

  2. Explore the side channels

    The narrow Menanggul and Kelenanap tributaries near Sukau are quieter than the main river, with better chances of Storm's stork, hornbills and otters.

  3. Visit Gomantong at dusk

    The Gomantong Caves are about 30 minutes from Sukau. Arrive in the late afternoon to watch the bats stream out and the bat hawks hunting them.

  4. Dress for leeches and rain

    On forest walks, leech socks, long trousers and a light rain jacket make a big difference. Stay with your guide on the boardwalks and trails.

  5. Keep your distance from elephants

    When a herd is on the bank, boats should stay well back, keep engines low and never block the animals' path to the water. Follow your boatman's lead.

Can you see wild orangutans on the Kinabatangan?

Yes, you can see wild orangutans on the Kinabatangan, especially in the riverside forest of the sanctuary, though sightings are not guaranteed. They are solitary and spread out, so most visitors see one or two over a two- or three-night stay. For a near-certain sighting, combine your trip with the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre near Sandakan, which is not wild but is close by.

The Kinabatangan River is one of the best places to see Bornean pygmy elephants, which live only in north-east Borneo. Herds travel up and down the river over several weeks, so sightings are never certain. Boats should keep well back from a herd and never block its path to the water. They are also found in other forests in eastern Sabah, such as the Danum Valley area.
